Overview

The Pastor will be a duly qualified Southern Baptist ordained male who is responsible for leading the church to function as a Bible based church. This would include providing leadership through biblical expository preaching/teaching; exercising biblically defined pastoral duties (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9 and 1 Peter 5:1-4); and leading and equipping ministry staff and lay leaders to perform their tasks. It would also include the overall leadership of the day-to-day operations of the church.

The Pastor needs a Bible based foundation for his life and ministry, living in the Word and possessing a godly character (1 Timothy 4:12). Also, he must agree with our core doctrine of belief aligned with the Baptist Faith & Message 2000 edition.

Expectations

As a spiritual leader of Somerset Hills Baptist Church (SHBC) the Pastor provides guidance for the church and its ministries. Following are the key duties required of the pastor:

  • Leading: The Pastor is a spiritual leader of the church as is written in Titus and is supported in this role by the Elders/Deacons. He is expected to feed the members and identify the needs of the church to grow in the Word and encourage them in their relationship with the Lord.
  • Preaching/Teaching: The Pastor affirms the inerrant authority of the Bible and exalts biblical principles by faithful, expository preaching of God’s Word – thereby nourishing the flock and protecting it from false doctrine, just as Paul exhorted Timothy! (2 Timothy 4:2-5)
  • Loving: The measure of a pastor’s love for God is directly linked to his care for Christ’s sheep (John 21:16). At SHBC, it is expected that the Pastor will demonstrate Christ’s love and care for the members of the church through visiting the ill and home-bound, counseling members and families, and providing support when necessary.
  • Grow: The Pastor should establish and promote the necessary tools and classes to equip the church members, from the youngest to the oldest, in growing disciples. The Pastor, with the Lord’s discernment, will work to support members in identifying their spiritual gifts and talents and develop future leaders of the church. The Pastor is especially focused on our study of God’s Word to grow mature Christians, strengthening their knowledge in the Word and ability to evangelize to the community.
  • Pastoral Growth: The candidate will commit to advance his God-given abilities through professional growth, including meeting with like-minded Pastors and Deacons for discipling, study, and mutual encouragement. He should continue his education through seminars, conferences, and similar activities.
  • Prayer: Model a lifestyle of prayer that glorifies God and serves as an example to the congregation. Matthew 14:23, Luke 6:12, Mark 1:35, Luke 5:16
  • Church Discipline:
    • Formative discipline: The Pastor should always be working to build up the members of the church, by promoting and modeling accountability relationships where temptation can be dealt with effectively.
    • Corrective discipline: If a member is openly sinning without remorse, the pastor, with the Elders/Deacons, must take biblical corrective measures. Matthew 18:15-17, 1 Timothy 5:19-22, Galatians 6:1, 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15. 1 Corinthians 5:1-12.
  • Ordinances/Special Services: The pastor will be responsible for performing the various Ordinances including the Lord’s Supper and Baptisms, and Special Services such as Weddings, Funerals.

This is a Baptist church which cooperates with the Southern Baptist Convention and that consistently emphasizes the sufficiency of the Bible as the Word of God, the need for believers in Jesus Christ to grow in their faith and obedience, fellowship, corporate worship, and sharing the Gospel with others. Over the years, and by God’s grace, the church has continued to love God and love one another as they strive to live in grace and truth.

The Lead Pastor contributes to the larger mission of PBC to glorify God by making disciples of all nations, by proclaiming and applying God’s Word to the lives of individuals, the church, and our community. He will be responsible for leading the church in remaining faithful to this vision, for the affirmation and development of future church leaders, for providing instruction in sound doctrine and protecting the body from those who would contradict it, and for ensuring effective pastoral care is provided to church members. The Lead Pastor will serve with a plurality of elders providing spiritual oversight of a congregationally governed church.
